The objective of this research work is to strengthen the reading competence of first-grade students at the Simón Rodríguez educational institution in the city of Santiago de Cali, through a pedagogical proposal based on the reading of children's literature texts that promote the development autonomous learning and a love of reading. This The objective responds to the need for pedagogical intervention to contribute to the transformation of practices in school and thus guarantee an improvement in the reading competence of students from the initial grades of schooling. To carry it out, specific activities are proposed around selected children's literature texts and the use of the school library, under the constructivist pedagogical framework and an interactive reading strategy. The approach of this study is qualitative, with an action research strategy, in accordance with the specific objectives set. The information collection techniques are: observation, using the field diary as an essential instrument for recording; semi-structured interviews; initial test to characterize the students' reading competence and final test that demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposal; all of the above validated by experts. The investigation is carried out in four phases: Identification of the problematic situation or statement of the problem; preparation of an action plan; development of the action plan and collection of data on its implementation and finally, reflection. The information is triangulated to act in each phase and give way to conclusions and recommendations.
