Introduction: interaction in the process of learning in academia in the areas of health has not been characterized by a dialogic interaction, in which the horizontal relations student and teacher is enable, which hinders to develop a good communication, mutual respect, empathy and appropriate transmission of knowledge of the profession between student and teacher. Objective: To understand the interaction of students and teachers in the theoretical and clinical settings in the faculty of dentistry at Universidad Cooperativa of Colombia. Materials and Methods: A qualitative study was conducted with focus and method which incorporates elements of ethnography, involving 5 students and 5 teachers conducting in-depth interviews until the information became saturated, for analysis of the data were condensed from 3 categories which emerged several trends. Results: experiences of students and teachers , a meaning of being a teacher and strengths and deficit aspects of teacher -student interaction in the learning process is viewed . There is little support, gaps in the authority and the ethical minimum criteria that made a note outside opinion and a rejection of the decisions of teachers. He also noted that he had intentions to improve this interaction and interest in learning by students. Conclusion: the role of teachers clinician is still tight social imaginary of being the authority, as the owner of knowledge and by the side of the students shows that this new generation is a bit simplistic, with more passive mentality and little interest to what is the discipline of a profession such as dentistry, for this requires that teachers in the areas of health are current processes and continuing education is necessary for institutions of higher education to support and encourage their teachers to be trained pedagogical models to carry out more effective teaching with their students and so meet the challenges of teaching and learning process.
