Livestock is an agricultural activity that can be aimed to obtaining milk, meat, both of them (dual purpose) or finally getting calves. Whatever approach is, it must be developed in a sustainable way, involving technical, administrative and financial operation systems. Nowadays, Colombian livestock industry is not working with a wide vision, aimed to convert the livestock to a suitable business activity. There are cattle herds without clear objectives, which subsist by appealing to practice cattle farming in a rustic and poorly way, limiting the productive potential that a herd and the environment where it is found might offer. The work goal was to generate a diagnosis based on a cattle herd that serves as an experimental and teaching center for the Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia, located in El Duende, jurisdiction of Piedecuesta, department of Santander. Making the diagnosis, was necessary evaluate in a methodic way, technical items such as the herd population dynamics, actual genetic profile, technology availability and application, nutritional topics, fodder component, actual infrastructure integrity status, besides to evaluate the administrative component linked to the farm operation process, production goals, legal regulation compliance, human resources and more. Once the diagnosis was completed, the production goals, and operation protocols were made and established aiming the livestock activity to a sustainable and remarkable business.
