Introduction: Dental caries is currently considered to be a sugar-dependent disease that generates a high disease burden and one of the factors that help to prevent it is a balanced diet. Objective: The objective of the present investigation was to determine the effectiveness of an educational strategy implemented with parents or caregivers of children 1 to 12 years of age to improve knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAPs) on reading nutritional labeling and selection of low-sugar foods in Villavicencio, Colombia. Materials and methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted without a control group, with a before and after, to 121 parents or caregivers of children aged 1 to 12 years who had access to the social network Facebook in Villavicencio, who signed the informed consent. The project was approved by the ethics subcommittee (Bioethical Concept No. BIO193). Results: After implementing a virtual educational strategy through the social network Facebook, a significant improvement was found (P<0. 001) in the score of correct answers within the dimensions Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices on reading nutrition labeling and selection of sweet-tasting foods (Knowledge before: 2.0 IQR[1.0-3.0], Knowledge after: 4.0 IQR[3.0-4.0]; Attitudes before: 1.0 IQR[0.0-2.0], Attitudes after: 2.0 IQR[1.0-2.0]; Practices before: 3.0 IQR[1.0-4.0]; Practices after: 5.0 IQR[3.0-6.0]). In addition, an increase was detected in the number of participants who reached the high level, in each of the dimensions (Knowledge before: 43.8%, Knowledge after: 86.0%; Attitudes before: 33.9%, Attitudes after: 69.4%; Practices before: 22.3%; Practices after: 53.7%). Conclusions: From the implementation of a virtual strategy through the social network Facebook, it was possible to improve the KAPs on the selection of low-sugar foods. In addition, most of the participants found a good acceptance of the course.
