Colombia has difficulty with English proficiency due to it was ranked one of the lowest performances in Latin America. In addition, rural sectors have the greatest need for bilingual education since relevant plans have not been implemented to achieve the bilingual education goal set by the Colombian Ministry of National Education (MEN, 2013). Therefore, the need to propose alternatives arises, considering that many of the rural sectors have technological equipment such as computers. It is proposed as a mediating solution, to interact with video games with the purpose of having students immersed in a technological environment and at the same time improve their competence in English. Therefore, the present research has a quantitative approach adopting the quasi-experimental design and explanatory scope, in which two groups of fifth grade of primary school belonging to the rural sector were taken as an experimental and control group. The pre-test, exposure to the video game The Sims: Makin' Magic only for the experimental group, and at the end a post-test to determine the incidence of the video game were taken. Finally, the research shows that exposure to the video game has a positive impact on the improvement of students' vocabulary understanding.
