This work is a compendium on the history of play character in western theater. Since the beggining of the 20th century, what is considered to be the contemporary character , the changes it experiences throughout this period, also what is called the character´s crisis, who exteriorizes new conflicts that human beings began experiencing. Besides, a new and important element comes up, “the I” and the awareness of existence. The character becomes a patchwork of conflics as it was cited by Bertol Brecht. A lot of studies and research have found new ways as regards as playwright and stage performance in order to thoroughly accomplish the manifestation of contemporary character.
