This is a research work on the project "Boys and Girls of Bogotá DC: between the Desire of the Educational Policy and the Reality of Institutional Practices" written as an internship task for the Master’s degree in Childhood and Culture of the Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas. This paper is an analysis of the vision of the social imaginary present both in public policy and in the ideas of directors and coordinators of the District Educational Institution (IED) Rafael Bernal Jiménez, specifically in the implementation and execution processes of the Artistic and Cultural Education Area (AEAC). Based on the principle of integral and educational quality, the General Education Law considers Artistic and Cultural Education to be among the mandatory and fundamental areas. The IED Rafael Bernal Jiménez is an official institution of basic and middle education located in the 12 de Octubre neighborhood of the district of Barrios Unidos in the city of Bogotá D.C. This institution has a particularity in the development of the AEAC due to its partnerships with the Bogotá Philharmonic Orchestra (OFB) and the District Institute of the Arts (IDARTES). This internship report seeks to identify the social imaginary that drive the implementation and development of the IED Rafael Bernal Jiménez in order to clarify not only the way in which the existing public policy is being understood and applied in this institution but also how the social imaginery that the educational directors have regarding the arts and culture influence the implementation processes and development of the AEAC in this public institution.
