IRIS refers to a disease or pathogen-specific inflammatory response in HIV-infected patients that may be triggered after initiation or change to more active antiretroviral therapy (ART). Usually occurs within the first 4 to 8 weeks after initiation of ART and has been associated with a wide range of pathologies, including mycobacterial and cryptococcal infections, non-Hodgkin lymphoma and Kaposis sarcoma (KS).
