This article attempts to clarify whether the chiftainship system was the political organization predominantly used in the septentrional Andes, and discusses the implications of the existing productive rationality , approaching the debate on what has been called vertical complementarity and the interethnic relationships registered among the different native groups along the colombain mountain chains.
