The practice of midwifery in Buenaventura and the Colombian Pacific region has a long tradition in the midst of social acceptance and the difficulties of legitimization on the part of institutions; In spite of the above, there are vital aspects such as a high degree of socio-cultural identity elements, so that in midwife practices there is an indissoluble conjunction between the vital trajectories of the communities in which they were socialized, starting from which have built a series of symbolisms that articulate the human and the divine, the natural and the habitual through the practices of midwifery as such, in which the knowledge acquired by each of them from their ancestors, and the benefits of the flora and fauna of Buenaventura and the Colombian Pacific. In this order, Buenaventura midwifery knowledge and practice research in relation to early childhood revolves around three dimensions: the first related to the knowledge of the symbols and different cultural expressions of midwifery in Buenaventura; in the second instance, with the description of the knowledge and practices of the midwives of Buenaventura, and finally, how the past, present and future of the midwifery are articulated and their contribution in the development of early childhood in the local area.
