The main object of study of the present research was Specialized Phraseological Units (SPU) in a context of Spanish to Portuguese translation, aiming at identifying the techniques used to establish equivalents. Such structures are important because they are inherent to specialized texts and usually offer some difficulty for the translation process in terms of their recognition and transposition into another language. For this study, we subscribe to the Communicative Theory of Terminology and to the contribution of Hurtado Albir (2001), who considers translation a communicative as well as a textual and cognitive process. The corpus from which the SPU analyzed were extracted was formed by books about Education written in Spanish as well as their translations into Portuguese; the total of words amounted to about one million in each language. We analyzed the original units and their translations, identifying the techniques used by the translators to establish equivalents. The techniques follow four models for categorization present in the works of Vinay and Darbelnet (1958), Barbosa (1990), Aubert (1998), and Hurtado Albir (2001). Based on our analysis, we put forward a new categorization of techniques, according to the revision performed.
