In this work we analyse the concept, origin and evolution over time of the social enterprise model, as well as the main variables that affect these enterprises. We also elaborate on their emergence in Medellin as a response to the social needs unsatisfied by the Estate. The model of social enterprise thus arise as businessmen and world leaders showed concern about the enterprise model. Rethinking this model became necessary given the challenges posed by new customers’ expectations, environmental commitments and the need to ensure the enterprise sustainability in the long term. We analyse the current state of this model in Medellin based on variables such as sustainability, governance, societal outreach. This model has been particularly encouraged in by private and public initiatives as part of the entrepreneurship culture established in the city. We thus conduct a qualitative, exploratory and descriptive research through a series of interviews with experts, including leaders, businessmen, intellectual and renowned people of Medellin holding positions on social enterprises or business with similar models. Those interviews allow us to characterize the model of social enterprise and to give insight about the current state of the model in the city as well as its outlook.
