Between 2011 and 2013, the Caribbean Headquarters of Universidad Nacional de Colombia at San Andres, in coordination with INFOTEP –Instituto de Formacion Tecnica Profesional, led the participative construction of a language policy for the archipelago department of San Andres, Providence and Kathleena, Colombia. The combination of workshops, actions of research, diagnostic language tests, and work with the community, allowed the project to identify the major problems derived from the presence of three major languages in contact on the islands: Creole, English and Spanish. The present article presents the contributions that the guidelines to the policy suggested at the time with respect to handling these languages in the formal system of education.
