Introduction and objectives: Since the enactment of Law 100, 1993, users of the new General System of Social Security in Health increased their knowledge of their rights, therefore they demand better quality and compliance in these services by health professionals. medicine. The objective is to identify the characteristics of the cases sued before the Santander Medical Ethics Court (TEMS). Methodology: Randomized cross-sectional descriptive study with a sample of 120 cases. The information was captured and reviewed by a member of TEMS, which was transcribed without identifying elements of those involved. The variables studied include the description of the plaintiff, the defendant and the resolution of the process. Results: 136 cases filed with the TEMS from 1994 to 2009 were reviewed. 56.6% of those affected were women, and 47.1% of the claims were referred to the TEMS by a judicial entity. 83.1% of the defendants were men, with an average of 42.12 years, of which 37.5% did not have a specialty. The time between the occurrence of the events and the filing in the TEMS was 244 days on average; Between the filing and the pronouncement it was 761 days on average. 89.5% were accused of violating the articles of the doctor-patient relationship. In the pronouncement, 72.7% of the cases were acquitted for lack of merits and 16.2% received a conviction. Conclusions: It is relevant that the doctor-patient relationship be analyzed and awareness actions on professional integrity are strengthened. Likewise, it is important to review the characteristics of the case processing.
