The current aging of the population poses challenges in terms of promoting active aging and stimulating communication and language. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of a linguistic-cognitive training in english as a foreign language, named ToTEFL (Tip of the Tongue and English as a Foreign Language), in the frecuency of the ToT phenomenon, the working memory scores and the time for a processing speed task in adults from 40 to 60 years old. This study was carried out with 66 male and female volunteers with a professional university degree, who teach public basic primary and secondary education in Monteria (Colombia). The sample was divided into two groups of thirty-three participants each (experimental and control). In both groups, three instruments were applied before and after training with the experimental group only (ToT phenomenon task, working memory tasks, processing speed tasks). The training was forty hours (ten hours per week) and it lasted four weeks. It was divided into four in situ weekly sessions (two hours each) and two hours of independent work. The results showed that after the ToTEFL training, the frequency of ToT phenomenon decreased, and a better phonological and semantic access was evidenced. In adition, there was an effect on working memory scores and the time for a processing speed task. The findings also revealed that the ToT phenomenon occurred from the age of 40 onwards, in male and female and less frequently in people with a higher level of education. This showed that the use of specific components of the foreign language (Phonology, Phonetics, Vocabulary), in addition to the ToTEFL training intensity, length and the type of exercises were effective in accessing the lexicon of the mother tongue and in better cognitive performance.
