This project assumes the challenge of proposing to a higher education institution, the use of institutional repositories through free software such as DSpace. The methodology applied for this case is that of a feasible project, by which, by means of a functional prototype, the benefits offered by this type of technology in the preservation of information are demonstrated. The research is under a non-experimental and transactional design with a descriptive and transactional level, since the observations to be executed will be made in the dependencies where the degree work and research are administered in the university institution only once and in a specific time , in accordance with the provisions of primary sources. The result is the proposal of an institutional repository for a university in Colombia. The conclusion reached is that the higher education institution cannot continue to administer the degree projects and research as is currently being done, since the deterioration of these documents has begun to appear, being a terrible problem for the institution, because valuable knowledge developed by the student body and the teaching staff is being lost.
