Introduction: fertility preservation among couples diagnosed with HIV infection raises several questions; the following review is intended to provide useful information to health workers in advising this group of patients. Objective: aim of this article is to review the available literature about the different options for fertility preservation and planning a pregnancy among couples with a diagnosis of HIV infection. Materials and methods: a search of the literature available in PubMed / Medline and Embase databases with the MeSH terms HIV, antiretroviral therapy, pregnancy, fertility and assisted reproductive technic; which included articles published between 1994 to 2012. Results: the available evidence establishing that HIV infection disrupts fertility. The different assisted reproductive techniques to achieve conception have been proven to be efficient decreasing the risk of viral transmission. Conclusions: HIV seroconcordant and serodiscordant couples can benefit from assisted reproductive techniques in planning a pregnancy, which depend on different factors, including which of the partner holds seropositive quality.
