This research established intervention strategies to improve the integrated management of urban solid waste in the departments of Caldas, Quindio and Risaralda. This intervention is necessary not only to promote Environmental Management, also, for Environmental Health. For its creation, objectives were raised including the characterization of urban solid waste management in the departments under analysis; the identification of technologies for the use of urban solid waste by technological surveillance; the estimate of the generation of urban solid waste in a study case and the determination of improvement opportunities for the integral management of solid waste. The characterization was developed by analyzing secondary information through several sources at the municipal, regional, and national level. Technological surveillance studies included the review of scientific articles and international specialized literature, besides, the analysis of the best available technologies of the European Union (BAT). For the case of analysis, this physical characterization of the waste was carried out with a sample of 400 users in the municipality of Manizales, according to the information collected by the Universidad Catolica de Manizales for the Integrated Solid Waste Management Plan of the City of Manizales. The strategies are focused on producers, suppliers, consumers, several actors of the productive, institutional and governmental systems and encourage the development of new business models where waste management and the Circular Economy can be incorporated.
