This paper presents a documentary research developed at the Department of languages at Universidad de La Guajira – Colombia. This analysis was developed from the perspective that Educational institutions need to have school administrators with extensive knowledge in education but also holders of irrefutable management skills in order to offer quality education to students, successfully respond to the demands of our society and ensure the achievement of the highest standards of institutional qualification. The theoretical framework of this research is based mainly in the postulates of Bryson (2011), Sainz (2009) and Orozco (2012). Through this study we seek to examine the management strategies used within the Department of languages at Universidad de La Guajira, to create a strategic planning, based on the literature review and interviews with teachers and administrators, thus contributing to quality assurance. The results of the management processes that take place within the Department of languages at Universidad de La Guajira are discussed throughout this article. We also present the most relevant theoretical contributions that give scientific support to what is exposed on this article, the strategic planning developed with the purpose of improving the institutional quality and effectiveness and finally we present in detail each of the proposed strategies.
