Conocimientos y actitud de los pediatras sobre limitación de los esfuerzos terapéuticos en niños, en una unidad de cuidados intensivos (UCI) de la ciudad de Popayán, Colombia
The present work was carried out in a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of the city of Popayan, in which the theoretical concepts and regulations on Limitation of Therapeutic Efforts (LET) of pediatric staff, the attitude towards the application of the LET, and the participation of the Clinical Ethics Committee in decision-making, through the application of a structured Likert-type survey and a focus group. Regarding knowledge, pediatricians obtained a score of 81.44%, a value that is rated Good according to the scale taken as a reference, where 45.45% of aspects evaluated had a Good 36.36% and 18.18% Regular, thus, professionals have important theoretical support to properly participate in the decision-making process regarding LET. Regarding attitude, pediatricians reached a score of 77.27%, which according to the scale is Acceptable, where 54.55% of aspects evaluated have an Acceptable rating, 36.36% “Good”, and 9.09% “Regular”, therefore, the majority of UCIP pediatricians have a positive position regarding the LET. Regarding the participation of the Clinical Ethics Committee, it intervened in 95.65% of cases, where the criteria used to determine it are poor quality of life (47.83%), disproportionate treatment (47.83%), and Treatment without beneficial effect (4.35%). Thus, the proposed objectives were fulfilled with the development of the investigation, such as measuring knowledge, attitude and analyzing the LET cases presented, defining the participation of the Ethics Committee.
