Background: Rice husks are used as fuel in both domestic and industrial applications. Some studies have shown that its thermal properties support its use as an energy source for combustion in ovens, even at an industrial level, as happens in companies in the rice sector of Cucuta. Objective: In this case, the objective is to determine the calorific value of the rice husk used as fuel in the drying ovens in one of the rice mills in the North Andean region and thus evaluate its efficiency as a source of thermal energy. Methods: In order to determine the thermal property in question, samples of pulverized husk were prepared through the process of cuarteo, milling and sieving; samples were taken to the calorimeter. Results: It was found that the calorific value of this rice husk exceeds 3700 cal/gr with 0.15% sulfur. Conclusion: It can be stated that the use of rice husk as a source of energy for the drying process of the grain in regional rice mills is totally valid because its calorific value is even above other samples studied worldwide. Keywords: Calorific value, Drying of rice, Fuel, Rice husk, Sulfur percentage.
