Una aproximación al desarrollo de la competencia comunicativa intercultural en los participantes de los eventos comunicativos en Inglés Intermedio de Gringo Tuesdays
Some language exchange clubs have been created in Bogota to learn and practice languages through interaction in a context that might resemble a real one. The language exchange club Gringo Tuesdays, which is held in a bar in the north of Bogota, has become a popular and important venue where people from different contexts and language proficiency levels in different languages can practice them informally with native speakers. Following Bennet (1993) and Byram (1997), this qualitative ethnographic research study intended to explore the role of the language exchange club Gringo Tuesdays in the development of the communicative intercultural competence of intermediate English participants in the Club. The data collection process was completed through journals written by the researchers, interviews and questionnaires answered by six people that attended the language exchange club. The data revealed that the participants used linguistic, social or personal, or intercultural communicative strategies in these interactions. It also showed that there was linguistic, social, personal, or intercultural learning after interacting with others, either foreigners or locals. This study makes a contribution to Sociolinguistics and Applied Linguistics in terms of the analysis of scenarios where language can be learned and practiced within a multicultural context like the language exchange club. This research also provides elements to pursue the analysis of the linguistic, social and cultural phenomena that take place either in this or in other language exchange venues.
