Osteoarthritis is considered a degenerative joint disease is the most common cause of claudication in horses. Anatomical structures such as articular cartilage, subchondral bone and synovial membrane have the function of cushioning and lubricating the joint, in turn, produce inflammatory cytokines and degrading enzymes, which can promote joint damage. The common diagnosis is radiography, it has low correlation with the clinic of the disease, the analysis of synovial fluid, allows to evaluate the leukocyte reaction of the joint fluid. Conventional therapies are limited to the inhibition of proinflammatory factors mediated by interleukins and the presentation of extracellular matrix degrading enzymes, therefore, the administration of corticosteroids via intra articular is the most frequent technique, to this is added the administration of aines systemically and the use of adjuvant therapies such as hyaluronic acid, glycosaminoglycans and chondroitin sulfate.
