Objective: To investigate, through a bibliographic study, the possible relationship that exists between the use of antidepressants and the manifestation of suicidal ideas. Method: For this, a qualitative descriptive research was carried out, which was developed from bibliographic studies, through the reading and analysis of specialized productions in the area. Results: Antidepressants are drugs used to restore mentally depressed patients to an improved mental state, reducing the intensity of symptoms. However, in studies carried out with patients using these drugs, there was an increase in the risk of suicidal ideation, suicide attempts and non-fatal self-harm. Conclusion: Although there are studies that show this risk. Also, there are studies that prove the real effectiveness of this class of drugs in the treatment of depression. Therefore, in the face of such setbacks, it is necessary to develop more studies on the subject and, during treatment with antidepressants, a more borderline monitoring between doctor and patient.
