This essay accounts for partial results of a higher research which basic purpose is to show the impact of war on the domestic (social) scenario. For this purpose, “El Recluta” (anthology of short stories about the “Guerra de los Mil Dias” war). This book has a special value since it was written during the war, which is a trait that distinguishes it from almost the entire literature (and topics) of such a period. The question about the family appears explicitly in the book: through a call made in 1901, newspaper “El Cascabel” directed by H. Gaviria, made the following proposal: “the following topic for a short story that does not exceed three columns on “El Cascabel”: A poor recruit who has fought in this civil war and when he returns home he finds… whatever Mr. Tomas Carrasquilla, Mr. Efe Gomez […] find.” “El Recluta” is a valuable work because it allows analyzing war from a different perspective; this book offers a bifocal view since we can go deep into live of both the recruit, his family, his domestic environment; in other words, it allows focusing on the people who are on the other side of the battle and not on the armies.
