The research makes an analysis of the place held by social representations of the public officers regarding the family as an institution and the incidence of such representations when legislating issues related to property rights and social security for same-gender couples. To identify the representations, two processes were methodologically carried out; first, direct observation of different sessions carried out by the Senate and the House of Representatives concerning the draft legislation “which aims to enact measures related to social protection of same-gender couples”; second, review of literary sources and newspaper articles where the main trends related to the topic could be pointed out. Having gathered the information, an analysis was made regarding emerging social representations using as theoretical references Edving Goffman, Serge Moscovici and Walter Lippmann. As on any research process, this exercise was made within the framework of a political situation that allowed a long term debate inside the country, concerning legal mechanisms that have to be overcome to include same-gender couples or persons in the normativity. These debates have opened a strong source of interrogations about whether the body of law is inclusive and fair enough. The relevance of the family concept also becomes essential for the research, because despite the intention of equating rights for same-gender couples – as it is stated by the law – the arguments provided by public officers against this Project, stated that, if it were accepted, the concept of family would be in jeopardy, as, according to Article 42 of the political constitution of Colombia, it can only exist between a man and a woman.
