Problem in which it is inscribed: Physical and symbolic deterioration of the architectural patrimony. After the earthquake of 1875, the planning of the growth of Cucuta revolved around the introduction of the railway , undoubtedly one of the bases of the economic development of the city until its disappearance in 1960; this involved not only a marked change in social and economic customs, but also in urban morphology, ‘turning his back on history’ and causing the deterioration and partial disappearance of the railway heritage of the city. This resulted in the loss of a significant benchmark for a society that tends not to recognize itself in its true potential. The scope of this tesis consists in the study and interpretation of the railway system of the city of Cucuta and its region at different scales of analysis, concluding with a specific intervention of architectural urban character, as defined in the title of this document. This 'exploratory voyage’ started with the study and interpretation of the regional scale, which allowed to determine what was the importance of each of the three structural routes of the railway system, which of these communicated with the neighboring country of Venezuela and which one only penetrated into the interior of the department. In the second instance the urban scale was approached, being able to establish the communication of the routes with the urban layout, understanding its functioning inside the urban centre and its connection with the old tram, now disappeared , of which was the main means of urban transport during the operation of the railway system. In this scale of analysis were found various vestiges of the aforementioned railway system and of the tram, which are their general states of conservation, their architectural typologies and their importance within the respective railway line to which they belonged. Based on the above, an identification map was constructed of the main resources that constituted this system, which are complemented by the buildings declared as Cultural Goods of National Order (BIC-Nal); on the basis of the above, a proposal for a route was generated that connects two points of significant importance such as the Southern Station of the railway and the former Customs , (place of convergence of the tram and the train of the oriental route), and its interconnection with other heritage referents. All this allowed us to advance to the next scale of analysis, that is, that of urban sector in which the apples that constitute it were classified according to their morphology, due to the condition of growth that the city had, There is an exponential difference between the area comprising the South Station and the former Customs. This difference made it possible to establish the next scale of analysis, that is, the zone, which encloses a block ‘to the round’ of the one where the South Station is located, chosen for its strategic importance and the quality of its various architectural components; this in order to understand the direct relationship with its immediate environment and what happens in it to finally reach the last scale of analysis, that is, the specific intervention of the South Station, valuing its architecture, its spatiality, its relationship with the environment and its history. The design proposal seeks to turn the building into a cultural and museum center around the railway theme, complementing it with the juxtaposition of a new building that contemplates within its design an interpretation of the operation of the South route, as mentioned above, was the only one that communicated to Cucuta with the interior of the department and integrate with the School Luis Carlos Galan Sarmiento, content within the POT (Spatial Planning Plan) as a heritage conservation building. In turn, this project is part of a general approach contained in the two previous scales of analysis in order to connect the design proposal with a sequence of possible projects, each with a patrimonial emphasis, which reaffirms the importance of the theme of the Station as one of the two anchors present. GENERAL OBJECTIVE: To counteract the urban stagnation and the deterioration processes of the sectors surrounding the former South Station of the railway of the city of Cucuta, with the purpose of recovering them and reintegrating them into contemporary urban-architectural dynamics and contributing to the integral development of the city. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: • Revitalize the associated urban public space. • Urban reconfigure the surrounding informal settlement area. • Environmentally recover areas at risk by mass and undeveloped land removal. • Rehabilitate the southern station to make it an urban configurator. • Recover and refuncionalize buildings considered as architectural heritage such as the School Luis Carlos Galan Sarmiento.
