Sub-superficial flow artificial wetlands were evaluated in order to establish the applicability of this kind of systems for a domestic wastewater of the Libre University, Bosque popular campus. Two wetlands at bench scale were constructed in translucent acrylic, one of those was planted with typical plants found in Bogota wetlands, and the other one was used as control without plants. Physical and chemical parameters like BOD, nitrogen, phos phorus, suspended solids, dissolved oxygen among others were evaluated in a two months period in order to establish this behavior as function of time. No significant difference was found between the two systems in most of the physical and chemical parameters evaluated, nevertheless removals above 60% for BOD and 90% for ammonia nitrogen. Also the contact between the air and the liquid in the wetland surface improves the gas exchange in a simple and effective way as is obser ved with the increase of dissolved oxygen.
