Dwelling within a place generates a print, not only in the inhabitants, but also in the inhabited place. The urban space constitutes this way as a text, as a sign-symbolic significant. The urban memory is the lecture of this text made by the urbaninhabitants daily. In the urban space, multiple memories –social and individual– are constructed by the social actors who dwell within it. The memory expresses the relation between the absence of the remembered thing and its presence, according to the form of representation. It let us see the memory as a semiotic reality. It is a construction that implies selection, elimination and recreation of aspects from the past times. The remembrance is an act of knowledge and creativity. In the remembrance intervenes the knowledge and the imagination, the cultural and the subjective, the social and the particular, the time and the space. The unpredictable and endless key for the understanding of its reality is to tackle from the plurality of voices present or hidden in its semiotic character.
