The article presents the results of formative research developed as part of the Specialization degree in Education and Family Guidance, of Fundacion Universitaria Monserrate in 2011. The research exercise allowed to build a state of the art of the documents in the area of family made by students, professors and other professionals of Fundacion Universitaria Monserrate. The documentary research was used as methodology , from preparing analitical summaries which allow the classification of information and generate a broad categorization on the subject. In light of this research process, we identified concepts and practices that have characterized the study of family at Fundacion Universitaria Monserrate and, in contrast to the historical context, a transformation in the concept of family is evidenced, some aspects of the context that influence their transformation were recognized and some of the types of families that are currently in our country were identified.
