This paper analyzes the behavior of lightning direct discharges on the atmospheric vertical hydrocarbon storage tanks, with internal floating roof with geodesic dome, for the Colombian electrical atmospheric activity. A review of API-RP 545 of 2009 is carried out, reviewing the particular considerations for this type of containers and contextualizing the recommendations of the standard to the Colombian case. Based on the foregoing considerations, an engineering proposal may be developed to consider internal floating roof tanks as self-protected structures under certain particular considerations of each tank.
