EnglishThe purpose of this article is to study the historical development of popular devotions to the Blessed Gonzalo de Amarante and their transplante, starting in the 16th century, from Portugal to Brazil, Mexico and Colombia. Additionally, it aims to identify the different manifestations of these devotions, mainly patronage, ex-votos and dances. At the end of the 18th century, with the enlightened piety, some bishops, presbyters and friars questioned these practices. Yet, these criticisms did not play a part in the decline of the devotions, which in Mexico were affected by demolition or closure of churches in the mid 19th century.
