The role of higher education in the production and dissemination of knowledge in which the individuals are constantly learning, involves reforms in their thinking, improvement, in the educational model and the research process to be relevant in its context. One of the more used tools by higher education Institutions (HEI) are knowledge management models and through these it is possible to obtain tangible and intangible products that contribute to solve problems of the today's society. The methodology used in the development of this research project, has as main objective to design a knowledge management model for the research groups of La Universidad de la Guajira, that allows to optimize the use of knowledge and improve productivity research. The project will be developed with a mixed quantitative and qualitative methodology, focusing on a particular case and developed in research groups that do not have the same number of researchers and that work in different roles and contexts. The final report of the master's thesis in which a knowledge management model is proposed for the research groups of Universidad de la Guajira, begins with the approach of the problem and its justification. A revision of the state of the art is accomplished and a conceptual framework is established, analyzing the different models of knowledge management. To have a more objective approach, information from the Uniguajira research center is collected and a survey is applied which analysis will allow us to propose a model and a plan for the implementation of it in the university with its respective conclusions and pertinent recommendations.
