This brief essay discusses Charles Bergquist’s text published in the special issue on Latin American Leftist Movements from the Russian Revolution to the Present. The essay offers a general proposal for historizing the histories of leftist movements in Colombia during the 20th century, and seeks to contribute to the debate over the role that leftist movements have played in the efforts to materialize different views of democracy in the country.
