Abstract:

The virtual transforms the initial news in a particular case of a more general problem, it is a fertile and powerful way that favors the processes of imagination, opens horizons, digs wells full of meaning under the superficiality of the immediate physical presence. Virtualization is not content with accelerating the already known processes, nor with bracketing, even annihilating, time or space, but inventing, with consumption and risk, qualitatively new speeds and mutant spaces-times. A human collective is the scenario of an economy or a cognitive ecology within which the species of representations (Sperber) evolve. Social forms, institutions and techniques model the cognitive environment, in such a way that certain types of ideas or messages are more likely to reproduce than others. Indeed, certain types of representations can hardly survive or even appear in environments devoid of certain intellectual technologies, while thriving in other "cognitive ecologies".
