Scientific investigation is one of the foundations that underpin integral education of medical students (1). In 1989 the ASCEMCOL (Association of scientific societies of medical students of Colombia) is created. This association has 33 AL (Local Associations), distributed throughout the national territory, that aim to implement mechanisms to strengthen, promote and coordinate scientific investigation activities with the extension to the community in the area of health sciences, in medical students of the country. Following indicators of undergraduate students’ scientific production and of the AL, as the way we quantified the published articles with student contribution, since 1 January to 31 December 2015, in medical magazines of the universities in which existed AL of medical students indexed in SciELO-Colombia (eight magazines in July 2016). For that, we considered “Students” to those authors that specified in their personal data that they were “medical student”, “Medical intern”, or to those that mentioned being members of an AL and didn’t specify their academic degree (2). We looked over 312 publications in the magazine and found 188 research articles (Original articles and short communications), 29 clinical cases, 2 letters to the editor, 93 reviews and special articles. If we consider the 188 original publications only (without revisions or special articles), 12 (6.38%) publications had student contribution and these correspond to 11 original investigation articles and one clinical case, published by students of 7 different medical schools of Colombia. Of the 12 student publications, no one had participation of students members of a local association or this membership was not specified on the article. The local associations that participated were from 7 medicine faculties. When revising the university of origin, 4 were the medicine faculties that registered at least one publication with students’ participation; however, this came mainly from two universities: the Universidad del Norte with 5 publications and the Universidad de Caldas with 3, both contribute with the 66.3 % of the students’ publication in the period of this study. Research is a process that does not end until the results are transformed into a publication on the manuscript of a Scientific Journal. Is to be noted that being a student or recently graduated does not determine the quality of a research, nor this should ever be a limit for the author of a manuscript that could be accepted in a Scientific Journal of any level. The important issue, aside of this, is the scientific excellence of the research and the quality of the redaction of the manuscript, reasons for which is fundamental to give more diffusion in the matter and provide the academic and extra-academic spaces necessaries so that the students of Latin America can learn how to public their researches. Initiatives as the one from ASCEMCOL and the one form the Comite Permanente de Evaluacion y Desarrollo Cientifico CPEDEC, must be supported and extended through the entire region to improve the quality of researches, spread their importance, provide information about where and how they should be published, give incentives that motivate the students to adopt a culture of scientific publication, which will lead to count with better researchers, generate researches of greater level and contribute to the sustainable development of Latin America.
