Abstract:

Adverse childhood experiences (ACE) produce negative consequences to one’s physical and mental health. Developmental delay could be one of these early consequences. This study aimed to examine the association between being exposed to ? 4 ACE and having global developmental delay in preschool children in a poor rural area in Colombia. The results indicated that 43.6% of the children had global developmental delay and the prevalence of being exposed to ? 4 ACEs was 13.8%. There was no statistically significant association between these two variables (p > 0.05). Various factors not included in the study such as protective or resilience factors, social adverse childhood experiences such as poverty and the cultural – ecological interpretation of adversity could explain these results. The high prevalence of ACEs and developmental delay found in this study suggest that the preschool population examined is highly affected and elements other than the ACEs explored in the study, which deserve further studies and interventions may be the explanation to these findings.
