Los cortejos del diablo is a work dealing with several topics highly related to social and historical conditions in Cartagena de Indias. One of these topics, besides permeating the whole work, sets the boundaries of the course of the main character as well as that of the other performers. It is power . Within the novel it is possible to observe how the inquisitor, headed by the Santa Inquisicion, makes use of his status to carry out and use this mechanism with the aim of pursuing his own interests as the old man, guided by the search of power, travels to Cartagena while channeling his destiny and defining his ending. In the same way, a strong dispute related to the domination is observed in the novel: on one hand, the pretention of the Church to exert control, and on the other hand, the resistance of the people against foreign policies. In brief, it is shown here how power plays an important role in the Espinosa’s novel, at first by configuring the main character and secondly, by the mise en scene of the context.
