The aim of this research is to describe the characteristics of Cultural References (CR) in the Subtitling for the Deaf and the Hard-of-Hearing (SDH) of the film “Robot & Frank” (In Spanish, Un amigo para Frank). In the methodological aspect, candidates to CR that could be located within the thematic categorization of Igareda (2011) and that could have a level of transculturality according to Pedersen (2005) were extracted. Subsequently, a list of candidates for CR was drawn up, from which a check with a reference corpus was carried out in order to confirm their cultural properties. Also, the Igareda (2011) thematic categorization and the transcultural levels proposed by Pedersen (2005) were taken into account. Once the cultural properties of CR were verified, their analysis was carried out in SDH and as a result 9 representative cases were found, in which CR could be included according to their type. The most frequent types of CR identified were those relating to general and vulgar slang; all of them were CR with an explicit nature (Royo, 2015) and most of them had a transcultural level (Pedersen, 2005). It was concluded that most of CR were characterized by having cultural contexts related to slang. Regarding the implications for SDH, it was found that many scenes of the film were accompanied by elements that reinforce the oral information and allow the recipient to obtain the meaning of CR.
