This research aims to determine the performance factors and variables involved in skills training in innovation programs Industrial Engineering offered by universities of Valle del Cauca Colombia, and present a diagnosis that allow institutions to devise a plan and strategies to improve or enhance the characteristics contained in the factors of training in innovation, achieving professionals with higher capacities to raise innovative solutions to problems in the region. The prospect of this paper is to analyze the fundamental role of universities in the innovation system, with an integrated approach understudied (Nunez, 2012). It was to design a statistical quantitative study to determine standard deviations, measures of dispersion and application of the correlation coefficient of Pearson, to determine the level performance variables and the correlations between the characteristics of the variables defined in the process of competency-based training in innovation. The research was conducted in two complementary phases. The first phase, based on a survey of four directors of Industrial Engineering Programs Valle del Cauca, allowed to establish the most important factors in shaping innovation. The second phase deepened the performance factors determined by applying 50 surveys deans, program directors and teachers Industrial Engineering Program. The main results were considered in college adoption of innovation has not been widely communicated and understood; it is seen as more negative the fact that no studies to determine the impact of innovation skills of graduates are performed; teachers think they have an average level in preparation in teaching methodologies of innovation; it is stated that the university has moderately with a process for detecting innovative learning tools; it is perceived that the state does not demonstrate a strong commitment to promote innovation; College managers understand that innovation can support or improve the proposed educational model.
