Student-Teacher Conferences are commonly used in the college writing classroom. Their benefits extend beyond one-on-one feedback for student writing and can enhance any language classroom. While there are many challenges, often logistical ones like large class sizes and little contact time, student-teacher conferences can better student and teacher performance alike. The main objective in this workshop is to better understand the goals of student-teacher conferences and discuss how to implement them with specific challenges of the Colombian classroom in mind. First, teachers will identify the goals of student-teacher conferences through small group discussions. They will respond to the questions: why have conferences, what can the teacher achieve, and what are the relevant and realistic goals. Second, teachers will discuss specific challenges and the logistics of holding conferences in their own classrooms and institutions. Through the use of authentic curriculum and scheduling, they will search for solutions to these challenges. Lastly, teachers will explore what to discuss with students during conferences and how to create an action plan with what the teacher has learned through the conference. Sample conference forms will be analyzed for content and clarity. At the end of the workshop, teachers should have a clear understanding of the benefits and goals of student-teacher conferences and how to implement them. They should have an outline for what to discuss during the conferences and how to use the information learned during conferences to direct future class time and learning.
