This paper describes the main characteristics of the structure and function of the system of cities that are part of the Region Administrativa y de Planeacion Especial, Region Central (RAPE-RC), formed, from 2014, by the city of Bogota and the departments of Boyaca, Cundinamarca, Meta and Tolima. In order for this management and planning instrument to achieve its objectives of regional integration and competitiveness, it must be based on the knowledge of the context and the dynamics of the territories that comprise it, as well as on the possibilities and the challenges of its implementation. Based on population density information, rank-size, primacy, and Clark-Evans indexes, and the percentages of occupancy by productive sectors and specialization of the departmental capitals of the RAPE-RC, a description of the components of the structure and function of the urban system, which presents an unbalanced vertical distribution, with a concentrated macrocephalic system in the Capital District and a diversification in the specialization of the activities at the main cities. From this perspective, the objective is to contribute to the understanding of the territorial context, as a reference, to deepen the knowledge of the dynamics and the regional functioning, within the framework of this management and planning tool.
