El articulo presenta una sintesis de la teoria enfermera del deficit de autocuidado propuesta por Dorothea Orem. Su descripcion plantea un acercamiento a la definicion que esta teorica da a los conceptos centrales del metaparadigma: Persona, entorno, salud y enfermeria. Lo contenido es producto de la revision de referentes bibliograficos y de la literatura de enfermeria, del desarrollo de encuentros binacionales de cuidado liderados por el grupo de investigacion y asesorias academicas de profesionales familiarizadas con su aplicacion en la docencia, investigacion y proyeccion social. Pretende ayudar a estudiantes, docentes y profesionales que inician el estudio y comprension del marco conceptual del Autocuidado.
