Abstract:

In October 2014, the Colombian government announced the provision often thousand scholarships to low-income students to study in higher education institutions. In this paper I estimate the indirect effect of this program on the Saber 11 test scores of students who took the test in 2015 and belonged to a school with at least one beneficiary. Using a model of differences in differences I find that the schools which had at least one beneficiary increased their math test score in 0.06 standard deviations. In reading, the effect was negative, having at least one beneficiary represented a decrease of 0.12 standard deviations. In the overall test score, the effect was negative and close to zero.
