This study was conducted with the main purpose of estimating the optimism level of the professors working at Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana – Monteria sectional – during the years 2006 and 2007. The sample was made of 73 participants to whom nine self-inform questionnaires were applied in order to evaluate: optimism, happiness, satisfaction with regard to their lives, personal strength, self-control, coping strategies, tolerance toward frustration and laboral satisfaction. The data showed that the professors, in general terms, consider they have reached their life expectancies. This appraisal is greater in divorced – elder than fifty years old male professors. The professors who receive a higher salary were the most optimists. Focusing on solving problems and the religion were the most common coping strategies the subjects manifested to use. Strength and gratitude were also highly scored by the participants. On the other hand, reaction to frustration was low scored. With regard to the issue of control, the female professors displayed major externality. In conclusion, the professors feel self-satisfied with their profession and perceive their job as a vocation, control attributed to luck, chance or heads.
