This paper offers a documentary review that allows us to identify the factors that affect the permanence of students in HEI's. It was found that one of the main issues that affect academic permanence is the irregular attendance of students. Such is the case of students who overstay the time stipulated in academic programs without getting a degree. From an endogenous perspective, this is attributed to six factors: teachers, curriculum, administration, academic performance, educational means and student welfare. Therefore, this paper aims to reflect on the increase of efforts to investigate irregular attendance. Thus, we reveal its origin and causes, and prevent its effects in the academic community.
