Objective: to describe the current state of emotional intelligence in the teachers of the Nueva Granada Military University. Method: descriptive observational. The following instruments were used: The Trait Meta Mood Scale 24 (TMMS-24) and a survey of sociodemographic variables. The perception of teachers in relation to the concept of emotional intelligence are also described. The sample was selected by convenience, 70 teachers of 6 faculties were selected. As a main result a proper performance in most teachers in the three skills tested, more experienced teachers were those who scored less in the three skills tested was found. With regard to the perception of the concept of emotional intelligence, it was found that most teachers related it with the skill of emotional regulation, 80% of teachers answered yes participate in a training program emotional skills.
