Abstract:

From the beginning of A Theory of Justice, Rawls makes it clear that his aim is to offer a systematic explanation that is superior to the prevailing utilitarianism. In contrast to the latter, Rawlsian philosophy rejects the idea that the sacrifices imposed on some can be compensated for by the larger number of advantages enjoyed by many. According to Jean-Pierre Dupuy, however, Rawls does not solve the issue of sacrifice. Therefore, there remains between him and utilitarianism a relationship of enemy brothers. Dupuy's main thesis, in his own words, is that applied to a sacrificial situation, John Rawls's principles of justice justify the sacrificial logic.
