The light emitting diodes or LED Technology, it using in the area of lighting, mainly in the street lighting. Because the new developments diodes, with higher luminous efficiencies and lower manufacturing cost, this allows to offer luminaries that generate savings up to 40% of the energy consumed, compared with high intensity discharge technology (HID) currently used in street lighting. However, at present in our country governs the technical regulation of lighting and street lighting – RETILAP- it is strict compliance for new or refurbished lighting system. For this reason when thinking about reshaping the public lighting system, it is necessary to have previous studies that enable verify compliance technically. This article contains the methodology carried out to select the luminaire or manufacturer, that guarantees compliance with current regulations on the 31 Street in the city of Palmira with the existing infrastructure, also is carried out a financial evaluation between the different options and so choose the most suitable to implement. It was carried out a survey of existing infrastructure, the lighting design with 3 types of different luminaries in LED technology, the financial evaluation of proposals base on the RETILAP and the analysis of returns on investment.
