This paper reports the study on the protection of the family as institution in Colombia from the Political Constitution of 1991 and the jurisprudence of the Constitutional Court. Also the protection the Court has given to the different kinds of families as a consequence of the recognition of the existence of a variety of social and political realities such as armed confl ict, displacement and the recognition of unions of couples of the same sex are analyzed.
